Ukraine has created a special unit of the drone army, which will use the Starlink satellite communication system to prevent Russian attacks.
The Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhnyi signed the establishment of the department in a project that will include several ministries and agencies, General Staff, Junat, said on January 27, 2023.
“The most professional soldiers” were selected for the group, each of which will receive drones, ammunition, Starlink stations and other equipment, he said on Facebook.
“We are doing everything to provide the military with modern technology,” he said. Starlink is a satellite internet system operated by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX and used by both civilians and the military in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s defense minister told Reuters last month that he sees drones as the future of modern warfare. Drones have played an important role on both sides since Russia began invading Ukraine in February of last year.
Moscow has used hundreds of Iranian “suicide drones” to attack Ukrainian cities. The Ukrainian military uses drones to drop small explosives on Russian troops and monitor their movements.
The war, which is entering its twelfth month, has degenerated in recent weeks into a conflict with little progress on the part of Ukraine or Russia.
